Rajiv Gandhi Resurrected - One outcome from 2019 Elections

After receiving a continuous volley “Chowkidar chor hai” and “Modi Chor hai”, Narendra Modi responded with overwhelming force on Saturday 04 May 2019, stating that the life of Congress chief Rahul Gandhi's father and former PM Rajiv Gandhi had ended as "bhrashtachari number 1" [corrupt number 1].

And, so, the cycle of remarks, which the Congress termed as "uncultured, illegal and against Indian traditions" made another cruel revolution of words.

While Rahul’s "chor" [thief] slur against Narendra Modi is not new, the immediate provocation for Modi seemed to be an interview given by Rahul Gandhi to a magazine where he boasts about “ripping apart” Modi’s “incorruptible” image and tearing it into shreds.

What made the events of the last week of electioneering different from earlier retaliation episodes? The reaction of the intellectuals, Press and other thought leaders in India. The political discourse was no longer a one-way street.

Both the sides were playing with fire and, "He who plays with fire risks being burned!"

The election results proved it.
